    Notes from 2026

I had a list of places I wanted to go, but ended up walking the show! You can see the places I fav’d in the photos of places I wanted to go!

Day1/Monday: We went to the range day and got there about 9am, went and stood in line to shoot the M107 50 bmg, some VIPs about 8 of them got in front of us. I got to shoot the M107 at 870 yards at a 3 foot target. Then the MRAD in 6.5 CM at 600 yards. And then the tripod with ar10 was super shaky at 300yards. For the MRAD I hit 4 of 4. While in line, two guys behind me were 6’9″ ish. I told them, I wanted a picture with them as I finally found someone bigger than me! They play professional football.

Then we went to Active Safety Designs, which is an FRT for about $250. They had it hooked up to a fightlite belt fed 556 ar15 and I LOVED shooting 20rds full auto style! The bushmaster full auto with 4 rds was kind of weak sauce.

The kimber 10mm was fun on the dueling tree. I don’t think I had any misses, but saw a lot of others missing. The huxwrx booth was one of my favs and I got to shoot mp5, lever 45-70, ak. The 45-70 was super soft suppressed. The ak was pretty good, but still had a lot of gas even with a flow threw. I got two sets of gloves for free, one for me and one for my lady.

The 50 bmg truck themed semi-truck was epic!

We left about 3pm and went to get our ammo from supervel. I LOVE unboxing ammo and putting it in ammo cans labeled. They look like precious jewels to me. I got 4k rds of 9mm. 1000rds of 223 and a bunch of 300 blk 200gr and a bunch of 9mm in 147 gr.

    DAY2/Tuesday:

Ron and I covered most of the big 2nd floor room and all of Caesars side. I was sad to see Aero Precision had turned their booth into a couch/chair. I wanted to talk to them about their long lead times. Aaron was saying Aero is having QA issues now too. I liked seeing all the new PSA guns. The 2011 looks pretty sweet, but if its high teens, I’d rather go with the Sig p211. I pet’d 6-7 versions of the p211. The 516 gen3 or whatever it is now is sweet and the mcx line is so much lighter.

I wanted to talk to premier body armor for another vertx bag shield, but found ace link Armor and during shotshow they have a 30% off on their website (see links below). I ended up removing one side of the throw over body armor for a vehicle storage and putting it in my bag.

I pet’d a girsan 2011. IMO I’d rather pay 2x the amount and get something else.

I’m over the moon for huxwrx and really loved seeing all their products.

The Bul Armory 2011/DS is freaking awesome. LOVE them all, but they do not give NRA instructor discounts. Really the P211 is the best 2011 IMO because the P320 magazine is so over-engineered and proven. They say the p211 is 6x more reliable then the very next competitor. The OA 2311 that uses a p320 mag is the next most reliable 2011 because…OF THE MAGAZINE!

We went to tops knives and for the first time I didn’t buy a TOPS knife! That old steel eagle I bought 15 years ago for $80 is now $300! I have several I have not used.

The NRA didn’t have any cool ar15 stickers 🙁

Ruger/Marlin was really cool. The 1894 45-70 is always a dream, but so hard to justify! They really need to come out with a 2011!

I went by silencershop and told them I’ve been waiting two weeks to sign the PDF and then that night I got an email 🙂

I got my 8th spyderco badge pin.

    Day3/Wednesday

Cody Firearms Museum had coupons for two free tickets to their Museum!

I went by vertx and got recommendation on a stretchy non-tactical tactical pants.

Their smallest sling bag is still too big IMO and it doesn’t have a dedicated CCW, its in the biggest pouch/zip. So I much prefer the Kelty Sling (waiting for expert voice to host the sling).

The streamlight wedge looks awesome and can fit in molle and lays flat. They have a 500 lums and 1000 lums version.

2.5 days at shotshow, so long as one of the days is the range day is about perfect for me. Maybe some day we will try the Stacoto day out at scamsight.

  • Customizing Foxy Flash for a SureFire Stiletto Belt Pouch

Doc Gunn loves to send me special projects to customize to meet his tuning requests.

I love to figure out how to solve the need and send it to him for feedback and improvements.

Here is a recent Foxy creation.

    <paste>

    Dear Friends:
Let me please introduce you all to my Very Good Friend, Thomas E. I met Thomas during a TTGSW course in UT in 2014 and vouch for his impeccable character and competence.
Over the past 10 years, Thomas in his one-man shop has made many customized items for me that not only are far better than mass-produced articles but which are often unique to meet a special need.
The latest example of this is the subject of this post:
Foxy Flash SureFire Stiletto Belt Pouch:
      (Short video presentation.)

Please note, the over the belt clip easily slips over belt w/o scratching it, yet locks into the belt
Hat clip still functions and goes easily into and out of the Foxy Flash Pouch

The Problem was how to carry a SureFire Stiletto White Light. Clipping it directly to my belt resulted in it detaching and falling onto the pavement on more than one occasion. Inside Pocket Carry was also sub-optimal. I had a leather light pouch reworked from a old holster by a Shoe Maker several years ago. It works well but its strong spring steel belt clip is very hard to attach and tears-up my belts.
I needed to call upon Brother Thomas’s genius for a better solution.
Thomas will make custom items for specific applications. If he cannot obtain an example locally, I send him the item, he makes a one-of-a-kind pouch (or holster) and returns everything to me, all very quickly and at an extremely reasonable cost.
I give Thomas and his products my Very Highest Recommendation.https://libertyfoxdefense.com/foxytuck/
    Respectfully Submitted,
    Doc
PS: To Instructors and other List Managers. Please forward this email to your Students/Lists. Thomas is a Resource that I am happy to share!

  • Conceal Carry FAQ

I’ve taught Utah Conceal Carry for over 10 years and over that time I have had hundreds of students with various perspectives and questions.

I do NOT like the what IF game, but I do like challenging questions.

Please note, I’m not an attorney and this is NOT legal advice and if you use it as legal advice, you are stealing from me 😉
These are my opinions and many are researched over many years and books/internet. I’m compiling them into one place.

What caliber should I conceal carry?

If in a freestate, 9mm & use defense loads like HST/underwood xtream defense/ FTM.
If in a non-free state and limited in capacity, look at 45 acp.
9mm is the most popular cartridge on the planet. Before Hollow Points, 9mm  was weak, but now with modern ammo its a pretty good stopper.

What type of gun should I carry for self defense?

    IMO, a P365/Glock 43x or similar(S&W Shield or ez380, Hellcat, xds etc).

IMO, you should have a full sized 9mm for training and home defense, PLUS a compact or sub-compact for conceal carry.

Having a jack of all trades is not ideal IMO. That would be a glock19 or p320 3.9” 9mm, a bit small for training/home defense and a bit too large for conceal carry.

Where can’t I carry a gun in Utah as a permit holder?

Jail, mental institution, or courthouse. Federal buildings like Post office, national park visitor centers. Behind metal detectors.

When am I justified in using deadly force?

When you see a weapon and you believe they are going to use it against you or they tell you they are going to kill/serious bodily injury you. To protect life/prevent serious bodily injury, not property.

What should I do if I’m pulled over while conceal carry?

Consider handing over CFP and drivers license when asked for drivers license. Don’t say you have a weapon as they approach the vehicle, nor say you have a CFP. Just hand CFP & Drivers license to them, IF in Utah and in a legal area to conceal.

If things get “Weird”, consider requesting another officer or their supervisor to come onsite. If they start acting like a criminal dressed as police for example.

Can 18y open carry in Utah?

Yes, if non a felon. MUST be “unloaded” if 18-20y old. Exceptions 18-20y with CFP CAN carry loaded concealed.

Can 18y get a CFP in Utah?

    Yes, a provisional permit.

How often do I need to renew my CFP?

5 years, currently it cost $20 to renew online.

What if I let my CFP permit expire longer than a year?

You must start over, meaning new photos/fingerprints and instructor signed CFP application.

Can I carry at church in Utah?

How can I legally bring my firearm when I fly?

What states should I avoid while carrying?

Do I need to keep my address current for my CFP/Utah Drivers license?

    Yes, https://bci.utah.gov/concealed-firearm/general-information/address-change/

How long does it take to get a UT CFP?

Utah is a shall issue, so within 60 days of payment/application.

What should I do after a self-defense shooting?

I Asked Massad Ayoob About Saying Nothing

Trouble if you “say nothing to the police after a shooting”. Trouble if diarrhea of the mouth!

What to Say to Responding Officers with Marc Victor

    REALLY GOOD LEGAL ADVICE:

What guidelines are there in Utah for protecting livestock?

I googled it, its not really a self-defense legal topic and I suggest you contact an attorney.

In Utah, if I draw, do I have to shoot? If I don’t shoot, will I be charged with brandishing?

5 million times a year, people stop an attack simply by showing they have a firearm.

In Utah, we passed 76-10-506, which states you may inform an attacker you have a firearm if you believe it will stop the attack.

“Threatening manner does not include: The possession of a dangerous weapon, whether visible or concealed, without additional behavior which is threatening; or Informing another of the actors possession of a deadly weapon in order to prevent what the actor reasonable perceives as a possible use of unlawful force by the other and actor is not engaged in any activity described in Subsection 76-2-402(2)(a) (use of force).”

Essentially, if you are justified in shooting an attacker, you are ALSO justified in showing/telling you have a gun to “prevent” an attack.  Does this mean all cops know and support 506? No, but it does help. Its no silver bullet, but it helps.

    Can I carry at work?

Most employers will terminate you if you are caught with “conceal carry”.

How long would it take you to find a new job?

How long would it take to replace your spouse?

YOU DECIDE if the outcomes are acceptable consequences and decide TOGETHER.

What states allow conceal carry at school?

    https://www.campussafetymagazine.com/university/list-of-states-that-allow-concealed-carry-guns-on-campus/

    11

Will Utah honor concealed firearm permits from other states?

In accordance with U.C.A. 76-10-523, Utah will honor a permit to carry a concealed firearm issued by another state or county.

How can I secure my firearms in my home/car?

There are car safes that can be tethered to help prevent the removal of the safe from your car.

Where is the safest place for my handgun?

IMO, you should carry all the time, especially in your home. You only have seconds to respond to an attack in your home (and elsewhere).
The most secure place is on your person IMO. If you can’t carry all your guns all the time, secure them in a safe from unauthorized access.

What is the mission of the Handgun?

    For an unexpected attack

What is the mission of the freedom rifle?

    For an expected attack

What should I do with my firearm after a defensive shoot and police are on their way?

Just about anywhere except in your hands, they do NOT know you are “the good guy”. Remember, the most secure place for your handgun is in your holster on your body. Its not getting lost/stolen nor unauthorized use. Simply holster in the condition it is in after a self defense use.

    Assuming, the scene is safe!

  • Removing the muzzle device on a Sig MCX spear 308

The new MCX spear 7.62×51 comes with a muzzle device that is “very difficult” to remove.

I called SIG and they confirmed it is a RH thread, so you loosen it to the left!
Sig offered that I could send it to them and they would remove the muzzle device.

I tried a propane torch and tried that several times, to the point of damaging the finish of the muzzle device, which I didn’t care about cuz I’m putting my QD on there instead.

I watched a video of a guy that put his entire rifle into a boiling water pot, including optic. Made me think twice about following his method, but sig confirmed that soaking in hot water is a good way to get it off.

I removed the barrel and soaked it in a pot of water that had boiled, but I did not boil it while the barrel was in there. I let it soak for about 15 minutes in HOT water.

Then I put the barrel in nylon jaws in my vice and tried going left with my tekton wrench. It damaged the wrench it was so tight. I gave it all I had and it would NOT come off! So I added a pipe cheater at about 3′ long and started rounding the bolt on the muzzle device. I re-attached some where else and with the cheater it came loose. I can loosen 125 lbs torqued lug nuts pretty easily.

I have no idea how tight this was, but likely over 200 lbs. I think it should be closer to 50 foot lbs torqued. The rockset should loosen up with the torch or hot water soak.

After I soaked it in water, I sprayed it heavily with wd40 (water displacement) and let it sit and then wiped it all off and did it a 2nd time.

The taper was NOT included with the rifle box like past mcx.

  • Shotshow 2023 recap

Though I was not able to attend this year. As I attend every other year. I was able to do a lot of research online/blogs/videos etc.

I built a playlist of shotshow vids that I found helpful:

TODO LIST WHILE AT SHOTSHOW 2023

    • Talk to sig and see if they have plans for
      • MCX 308 (yep, they announced the sig mcx in 308, 6.5 CM and sig fury 2.77
      • P320 10mm in about a 4”
    • PSA
      • Talk to PSA about an NRA instructor discount – ruger, sig, springfield have great NRA instructor discount programs
      • See all their new systems jakl etc.
      • What sig optics will fit rock 5.7? w/o adapter plates
      • What sig optics will fit dagger? w/o adapter plates
    • Look around for good thermal optics – but with sig instructor discount, Thomas plans to save up for that (holosun has therma now!)
    • Find a good source for CNC aluminum – GG3
    • Go see Aero Precision and pet their new systems, including suppressors. I LOVE the 1:8 wylde barrels (Ballistic advantage)
    • Get discount codes from vendors
    • Check out B&T firearms, especially the p320 skel kit /chasy https://bt-usa.com/products/usw-320/

REMINDER, most manf give NRA instructor discounts (ruger, sig etc), if you are in Utah and in the future you intend to help youth/BSA with shooting sports, you can become an NRA instructor for $50 and a couple of saturdays. https://www.utahscouts.org/shootingsports

    SUMMARY 2023

    • Thomas is most Excited about:
      • I’m super excited the mcx 308 is coming out in Feb, followed by 6.5 CM and then followed by 277 fury. IMO I think the 13” 308 is the way to go, given planning to run suppressor. If/when 277 is common, I could get a barrel for that.
      • STILL crossing my fingers for a 4” p320 10mm
      • Sig range day, they have their own range day, IMO I would go to this if mutually exclusive (miss all the other ones and go to SIG)
      • AAC ammo – non-gov contractor, producing ammo for americans! PLEASE buy their ammo, they are making it for us and at a good value. Try some SMK 70gr 5.56 or what not, in the future, they’ll do steel cased 7.62×39, 5.45×39, 308r (I believe), practice ammo and defense ammo in major calibers. 9mm, 45, 5.56, 308, 5.7 etc https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=af89sAet05Y

    2023 NOTES:

https://magholder.com/ conceal carry horizontal mag pouch carry

  • How to configure an MCX to work like a bolt-action for suppressor benefits

I was looking at the Ruger American Ranch rifle in 300 blk, so I’d have a bolt-action suppressed.

See, when the action opens a lot of noise comes out, so all semi-autos are louder than bolt guns.

I was looking at the gas adjustment knob on my MCX and noticed a small hole and larger hole (low/high gas pressure). Shooting suppressed, the low is perfect IMO, if you goal is to have a semi-auto.

There are times when you want maximum noise reduction, but don’t care about follow up shots, or if follow up shots are needed, you can do that a bit slower by manually running the charging handle on the MCX.

So I did some tinkering and figured out if I move the gas all the way left and go past the detent, the bolt will not cycle and act like a bolt action! Only thing is, we MUST make sure the gas adjustment knob does NOT fly off, so it MUST be retained! and the adjustment knob doesn’t quite clear the underside of the rail/upper receiver.

I sanded/filed down just a little bit of the ear on the knob and now it clears and with some effort (using a bullet or multi-tool), you can adjust the gas to OFF with the handguard on. Its also easy to remove the handguard on the MCX, but both methods work after the slight modification to the knob.

If you do file, you need to cover the steel so it doesn’t rust or corrode. I suggest black cerakote; the heat treated version you can buy from brownells.

I’ll make a video, but here are some photos.

TIP. If you want to turn the gas all the way off and have your MCX act like a single shot while suppressed. Turn the gas knob all the way left, so from Low to past that detent. Tug on the knob and ensure it won’t fly off. You basically want the top ear to be at the 12 oclock position.

larger gas hole on the right
notice coating to protect the sanded down raw metal
    12 oclock gas disabled
left side of firearm, 12 oclock position=gas off
  • Comparing three PCC 9mms – Sig MPX 9mm, Aero Prec EPC9 and PSA’s ak-v 9mm

UPDATE: January 2024, I got a CMMG 9mm upper, so I’m adding details about my review of that system too.

I wanted to test accuracy and reliability of the three PCCs (MPX, EPC and AK-v)

I’ve had my MPX for a long time and never felt the need to branch out to other PCC (pistol caliber carbine). I also felt for many many years that a PCC was a “range toy”. Which it is and so much more! Including a truck gun, get home gun and general self-defense that matches your other handguns.

If you are going to have a carbine, let it be a rifle caliber! But, I like shooting steel and doing steel drills closer up than 100 yards. The PCC is also handy for a truck gun, having the same caliber as a handgun makes sense to me.

If you’ve never shot a PCC, they are FAST, FUN and a great time! I’d say with a red dot and stock/brace, they are 2-3x faster than a traditional handgun!

So, I built out a EPC 9 and put a red dot on it (holosun 510c). This was in my truck with 5 27 rd mags for about 6 months. The EPC 9 takes “glock style mags”.

Having glock mags on the EPC 9 seems like a big benefit, but they do not load as easily as the ak-v mags nor the sig mpx mags.

If your truck system/get home systems uses glock mags for the handgun and PCC, then maybe this is a good option for you.

For me, after these tests, I plan to off load the Aero Precision EPC 9 and keep the MPX and ak-v.

In the past, holosun 515 or 510 have been my go to red dot. I think I’m changing to Sig Romeo 5 going forward. Higher volume/lower price and works with the juliet 3x magnifier.

Similar to a 357 lever gun and revolver, having a handgun and “carbine” of the same caliber makes sense to me.  Also, 9mm benefits from a longer barrel ballistically (for power, accuracy and distance)

One of the most common calibers in the world is the 9mm and 22lr.

I strongly suggest you look into getting a PCC in 9mm.

I would recommend the PSA AK-V 9mm. Mine came with 10 35 rd mags for about $1,000! and a really great pistol brace that looks and works great!

left to right: EPC9 (pistol brace from factory > ak-v 9m (pistol brace from factory) and Sig MPX SBR’d via gov-scam-tax
PROTIP: 3-lug muzzle device means sharing the suppressor love is fast and easy!…and sometimes HOT

One of the funnest guns I’ve ever shot! The PSA AK-V does not disappoint! only 350 rounds loaded and ready for the socialist apocalypse

    CMMG 9mm upper review

I tried the mat9 and it did not work with my mag-dump trigger, so I returned it to opticsplanet and got the CMMG 9mm.

I did some research and I saw some other “mag dump triggers” working with the CMMG 9mm upper, so I ordered one of those.

It works fantastic! So much so, I sold my PSA AKV 9mm. I doubt anything non-ak would be even close to as reliable as an akv.

    Pros of the cmmg ar9

    • With a rotating-like bolt, no need to have a super heavy bolt!
    • Lower recoil than any other PCC I’ve shot. Seems even less than the mpx, but they are likely very close.
    • Also another advantage of the radial bolt is much much less toxic fumes in the face while shooting suppressed.
    • works with magdump trigger from BDU
    • No need to have a unique ar15 lower, as you can use 9mm adapter mags and use a standard ar15 lower
      • https://cmmg.com/adapter-magazine-9-ar-conversion-10-30rd-2-pack
      • Takes seconds to convert a normal pmag into a 9mm pmag!
      • If you live in a commie-state like Cali, you can snip it for 10 rds, but in freestates, you can get the full 30rd (you never had enough time or ammo in a gunfight, so the govscam makes you have less ammo, they don’t care about you!)

CONS of the cmmg 9 upper

    • If you use the converted 9mm adapters, the mags can get pricy. About $45 per mag if you include the pmag and adapter insert.

This is the version I got (the 5″ 9mm banshee)
    https://cmmg.com/upper-group-banshee-9mm-5

Protip! They have a NRA Instructor discount program! Its called their “Pro Purchase form“. 40% off! You can buy 1 firearm per year and 2 uppers! The accessories have a discount, but its variable on the percentage.

    Trigger Comparison

    GunTrigger weightImpressions
ak-v with franklin3lbsexcellent trigger for an ak
ak-v with ALG trigger1almost 5 lbsexcellent trigger for an ak
MPXI upgraded to an overpriced geissele
EPCgood trigger and easy to be super accurate
CMMGstandard ar15 triggergiven standard, it can be as nice as you’d want

    SUMMARY:

As you can see, the EPC9 has the best consistent groups and shoots just about any of the ammo I tested equally well.  Then the ak-v9 followed by the MPX 9.

Distance about 50 yards and prone position. After a 10 shot group, I would make adjustments to the red dot. I also turned the red dot down as much as I could and still see it for precision. I would also aim carefully at the top right corner of the post-it note.

As far as most reliable. I would say, given my limited testing. The ak-v wins reliability on diff ammo. Followed by EPC9 and then last is mpx. In the past the MPX has done well with steel cased ammo and just about any ammo I fed it, but for some reason it does NOT like Super Vel ammo (I will re-test with adjusting the gas).

Get yourself one of these PCCs, you won’t regret it. I kind of want to take an ar-15 class with a AR9 (well, its going to be a MPX, but close enough…or maybe even the AK-v!
