  • Sig p365 smaller and more capacity than Glock 43, S&W Shield, XDs 9 & PF9

Many have contacted me asking for my thoughts and input on the Sig P365.

With any self-defense system, reliability and durability is number one. Of course ideally we’d have a rifle, but those are hard to conceal. So we get by with “service pistols 4″+ barrels and 15+ capacity” or a sub-compact like a Sig P365. We all agree that a sub-compact on our person is better than a full sized pistol in the safe.

The two most important features of the Sig P365 to me is FIRST the 10+1 Capacity and SECOND is the night sights. Few sub-compacts come from the factory with night sights.

Here are some comparison photos of the size of the XDs 9mm, S&W Shield 9mm and the Sig P365.  I think nutnfancy and I are the only ones on the planet that love the keltec pf9. I retired my pf9 after 10 years of conceal-carry because the Sig p365 is so “pocket carry” friendly.

oh yes, I do love the stippling of the p365!

    PROS of Sig p365

    1. 10+1 capacity with a 12+1 mag option
    2. Night sights from factory
    3. reliable/rugged Sig (sure, the first release had some issues that appear to be resolved).
    4. Pocket carry (size and slide slant aid in pocket carry ability)
    5. stippling is excellent
    6. shoot-ability is great, even w/o the mag ext it was very shootable and recoil was manageable unlike the PF9 (extreme recoil on PF9).
    7. +P rated
    8. great trigger

    Cons of P365

    1. I really can’t think of any cons, even the price is reasonable if you factor in the night sights and you don’t have to take it to a gun smith or wrestle with swap’n the sights. I have a close friend that waited over a year to get his night sights installed. Most believe that 80% of attacks are at night. You REALLY need to be able to identify the threat with a light and use night sights for good sight-pictures.

    PROS of S&W Shield

    1. I really do love the manual safety for a purse carry niche(for the ladies).
    2. price. Its really hard not to buy more shields given their price and strategically place them where I might need them.
    3. The shield was my most recommended sub-compact due to excellent ergonomics and price/value.

    Cons of Shield:

    1. Until the P365, we didn’t know we needed 10+1 in a smaller gun than the Shield. now that the P365 is an option, the really only con I can think of for the shield is limited capacity.

    Pros of xdS:

    1. I really love the grip safety for added peace of mind, especially for storing the dark or in a “hidden” area of a vehicle.
    2. slimmest of the 3 compared in this article.
    3. the excellent galco shoulder holster fits the xds and glock 43.

    Cons of the xds:

    1. price for the 9mm version
    2. really no big downside, these three are all excellent choices IMO.

  • improvised 10mm snakeshot for a woods gun

One of the downsides of the 10mm for a trail-gun or woods/predator defense gun is that there is no commercial offering for snake/shotshell loads.

IMO, the 454 5″ Ruger Super Redhawk is hands down THE BEST Predator Defense gun. Both for large predators & venomous snakes (45 colt snake shot is amazing!).
But, one downside to the 454 is size & weight and difficulty concealing. For that reason, I have a 10mm semi-auto when I need to go into the woods; concealed. I’m very hopeful for the XDM 10mm coming out in 2017!  But until then, I have to “hold my nose” and use a Glock 20.

My Glock 20 has a 10mm, 40 SW & 9×25 barrel. So, I was thinking of an experiment of trying  40 SW snakeshot in a 10MM barrel.

THE RESULTS of 40 SW in a 10mm Barrel.

Patterns good at 8′, but may not be effective on a venomous snake at 10′.
The TWO shotshells I tested; BOTH failed to eject (FTE).
My impression is, the “casing” over expanded in the 10mm chamber, and thus failed to eject(gun closed on an empty casing, so it was NOT a brass high malfunction (type2)).  The gun cycled enough to reset the trigger. I could tap-slap-my-shoulder and resolve the malfunction (Type 1).

Here are photos of the casings & pattern.
The author aimed at the square cut-out at 10′.
The author aimed at the orange circle at 8′.

casings after firing 40 SW snakeshot out of a 10mm barrel.

Shooting anything but shotsell 40 S&W through a 10mm barrel is NOT recommended. For example, do NOT shoot 40 S&W FMJ nor HP in a 10mm barrel. I’ve seen people on youtube shoot FMJ 40 S&W through their 10mm chamber!  NOT RECOMMENDED. I did not follow my own advice, and tried shooting 40 SW through 10mm Barrel, I survived w/o injury…but you likely will be injured if you ignore my advice & shoot the wrong bullet in the wrong barrel. One of THE most dangerous combinations is 40SW in a 9×25 barrel!!! YIKES!!!

  • Powering your home when the grid is down for less than $650

Recently, we did a “workshop” to watch this product demo’d at my friends house.

This is a new…but proven product that allows you to switch the electricity coming in from the GRID to a 2000,3000, 4000 or 9300 watt generator!

    Installing “homerun” on my home:

    More details:
    http://www.myinpower.com/

NOTE: The group buy is OVER, but we have a few extra units for sale. We got a group buy discount and their price is going up! so don’t wait too long!

Currently, you may buy an extra homerun for $650. May the price is going up to $700.

    [gform form=’https://docs.google.com/forms/d/1wJEJDOtSxLHsTbBG_AjFHFM3At-G24CEnJp0iN6_UuY/viewform?start=invite’ ]

Thomas takes NO PAYMENTS for this. I’m simply compiling a list of those interested in a “group buy/pre-order”.

Please watch some of the videos, so you understand how robust/simple this device is. Once installed, anyone can cut-over to the generator to run your home furnace “blower”. (without the blower, your furnace can’t move the warm air. A gas heater isn’t very effective w/o a blower.

Depending on how many watts your fridge/freezer draws, you can also run your freezer to prevent from spoiling hundreds of dollars of meat and other vital food items.

Old people may also require cooling as a life-safety issue.

  • HAM Radio Familiarization Workshop

Radio Familiarization/How to operate your HAM Radio UV-5Ra

    April 2016 Handout

    Thomas

UPDATE: March 2020 – SIGN UP for free workshop at:
    https://libertyfoxdefense.com/workshops/

WARNING: FCC requires a HAM Radio license to transmit on HAM Frequencies. I hear the fine is pretty high! A license is NOT required to LISTEN ONLY.
Take time to review the law for yourself, YOU are responsible for your safety!

The UV-5RA covers TWO HAM bands, the 2 meter & 70 cm, and can listen to FM radio Frequencies.

https://hamstudy.org/ is the quickest & easiest way to study to pass your HAM Radio license test.

Your Radio has been pre-programmed for Emergency Radio Communication (ERC) frequencies in “memory channels” for the Saratoga Springs, UT area. We recommend you charge your battery at least every 3 months.

For more quick start tips, visit my blog at:

    https://libertyfoxdefense.com/?s=ham

How to operate your HAM Radio LAB/HANDS-ON

    1. What Frequencies do not require a license? FRS do NOT require a license. These are channels 21 through 34. GMRS technically requires a license, which is ch35-ch42.
    2. How to listen to “Emergency Radio Communications (ERC)” Frequencies in our area?  Ch. 8 is our most used ERC freq., followed by Ch 1.
    3. How to get to the “memory Channels”? If your LCD display does not have text, push the ORANGE V/M button.
    4. How to toggle between “Memory channels”? See your BLUE A/B button? That toggles between top/bottom Freq.
    5. How to listen to the FM Radio? Push the LEFT side ORANGE CALL button to get into FM mode, then enter the 107.500 or whatever or use the arrow keys.
    6. How to tune-into NOAA (National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration)?V/M mode, use arrow buttons to get to ch 0.
    7. The radio has the ability to monitor two channels simultaneously, channels A (upper display line) and B (lower display line). The A and B channels that are stored in memory are the same, but the A channels are listed by frequency and the B channels are listed by name.
    8. My radio has not been programmed for my local ERC frequencies, how do I get my radio programmed?
      1. google/download chirp
      2. Contact Thomas via email to get the data file (if you are outside Utah, you will need to find our local frequencies (google repeaters and find a ham geek near you).
      3. Follow this how-to document on importing and pushing the config to your radio.

    Search amazon for uv-5r accessories.

    Recommended Radio (uv5r):

  • Precision Rifle Recommendations

    Summary

I’ve had several people ask for my input on precision rifle(s).

I’ve owned a few precision rifles. Some I’ve tuned to ⅓ MOA (so ⅓ of an inch at 100 yards).  Bolt guns, gas-guns, mostly 308.

    Philosophy of use

These systems need to be purpose built.  What are they going to be used for?

    • end of times fantasy?
    • pdog (prairie dog) heaven?
    • long range competition?
    • precision rifle training & learning?
    • hunting

Personally, I built my “precision rifle systems” for precision rifle training and end of times fantasy. Match grade ammo can be expensive, so do your learning on a 308. Then you can upgrade from there.

When shooting a 308 all day, it helps to have a heavy barrel & heavy system. Not to mention your HB helps stay consistent on follow up shots/groups.

The systems I built/tuned have excelled in precision rifle classes. I’ve tried to use them for hunting & its not so much fun carrying such a heavy gun into the field.

    My First Precision Rifle

    Less expensive military M24
wearing a Supersniper 5-20 HD scope

Rem 700 5r rifling 308 with the HS precision stock. These are highly recommended by Precision rifle instructors. Many of my buddies have these and this was my first precision rifle.

You may notice, no bi-pods? I’m a bag shooter. I just use my field bag. I own the overpriced harris bipods, but they have been collecting dust for years!

    http://www.budsgunshop.com/catalog/product_info.php/products_id/411540287/REM+700+SS+308+24+5R+MILSPEC

This rifle shoots better than I do! When I do my job, its ⅓ MOA.  The barrel doesn’t foul much…if ever. Guys without the 5R and without the “precision lapping” are constantly cleaning their barrels in Precision Rifle classes I’ve taken.  I’ve seen it. Their groups start opening up and they clean and clean. I shot mine all 4 days w/o cleaning it in several precision rifle classes.

I’ve looked down the barrels of many rifles with a medical grade “scope”. None have looked better than the 5R!

I HIGHLY recommend this cheek riser:

    My SECOND Precision Rifle

I MIGHT consider selling my RRA 308, then purchase a Ruger Precision Rifle.

Rock River Arms (RRA) 26″ HB Varmit 308
    wearing a supersniper 3-9 scope

    http://www.slickguns.com/search/apachesolr_search/rra%20308%2026%22

    RRA 26” HB 308 ar10

I chose this system mostly because of the magazines were quality, plentiful & inexpensive compared to other systems.  Since purchasing my RRA; Magpul came out with a pmag for DPMS compliant ar10s.  Had I known that, I would have selected a DPMS compliant ar10.

I’m currently building a DPMS compliant ar10, but it will be a “run & gun system” of 18” medium barrel.

    My ar10 mods:

For hunting, I really do love the Ruger American Rifle Predator 308 (compact/threaded):

    My Recommendation

Q: IF I WAS STARTING FRESH/NEW, what precision rifle system would I select?

A: If I didn’t already have several precision rifle systems, I would purchase the Ruger Precision Rifle for several reasons.

Requirements/features of the Ruger Precision Rifle

    • Medium to heavy barrel.  I like the barrel weight of the RPR – not too heavy & not too light. I think this would be good “profile” for competition, training, or even hunting in a pinch.
    • Adjustable cheek, free float, adjustable trigger.
    • 6.5 credmoor. compare the 6.5 to the 308 at 1000 yards, 1300 yards. Less felt recoil, better ballistics than the 308. You can buy 6.5 off the shelf that is excellent ammo.  Compare at this article http://www.scout.com/military/snipers-hide/story/1496625-hello-2015-now-replace-your-308  (see below too)

      https://www.google.com/#q=nutnfancy+6.5+creedmoor
    • Freefloat handgaurd — ar15 compatible
    • great out of the box trigger
    • foldable stock
    • removable magazine, that uses pmags. about $25 from brownells.
    • due to the bolt action & removable mags, I’m not inclined to think one needs an ar10.  for similar accuracy, a “gas gun” is almost twice as much as a bolt gun.
    • excellent price point for features
    • fully adjustable length of pull, especially for tall persons.
    • fully adjustable cheek.
    • threaded! I have spent a small fortune threading my precision rifles.

  • NG Jerky Recipe

Last October we came into a lot of hamburger that is lean. So I cranked up our smoker and started to refine my jerky recipe.

    JERKY

I’ve finally “perfected” my home-made jerky recipe! After 18 versions, its just right for me. Those that attend the free workshop go home with free home-made jerky. We’ll build the jerky together. Our build won’t be done in time for the end of the workshop, so you’ll go home with the previous build.

I’ve heard from many people this is the best jerky they have ever tasted. This is about 18 iterations of slight changes to get to perfection.

Email me if you would like to order a ziplock bag of non-govt (NG) Jerky.

    Thomas’ NG Jerky Recipe:

    4 lbs hamburger – LEAN

    2 tablespoons seasoning salt

2 tablespoons of Montreal Steak Seasoning(costco)

1 tablespoon freshly ground black pepper

1 tablespoon sweet mesquite seasoning (from costco)

extra pepper is ground on top before it goes into the smoker. (I seriously grind about half a grinder full of black pepper corns)

4-6 hardwood “discs” for smoking, which is only enough wood-smoke for about an hour.

Bradley Smoker at 125 degrees.  (Traeger for 4 hours at 150 degrees, rotating racks 2-3 times.  5-6 hours if using ticker nozzle)

1 packet of jerky cure & seasoning per 2 lbs.

These are the racks I bought, so the jerky wouldn’t fall. 1/4 squares is way better than 1″ squares 😉

    FAQ:

    1. Are you comfortable with the quality of this ammo?
Given their 100% guarantee & the ammunition I’ve personally tested, I would say this is pretty good ammo.  Everything functioned properly for me & grouped well for me.
    2. Would I take this ammo to a Marksmanship Matters class?
No, I would NOT bring this ammo to a marksmanship Matters class because they require new ammo and I don’t want to impact my training.
    3. Would I take this ammo to Front sight? Yes…but I do NOT attend that school any more.

  • preparedness “get home kits”

    Everyday preparedness kits/bags!

Depending on your area of the country, you may call these kits a “winter kit”, get home kit, get home bag, 72 kit, car kit.

Whatever you call them, you SHOULD have them in EVERY vehicle!

I’m surprised how often I get into my kits in everyday use. Usually its a bandaid or cash. I ALWAYS REPLACE THE ITEMS!

UPDATE:  A friend and I compared kits, and I learned a very valuable lesson! A get home bag, should be a get home FAST bag. If its 50+ LBS, its going to slow you down and you may need to get home before it gets worse.

So, I re-purposed a “book” bag for a smaller/agile Get Home Bag (GHB). My friend basically has 3 types of kits. Get home bags (everything is small/micro), evacuate on foot bags, and evacuate in car TUBS.

Why not have ALL OF THE ABOVE!?! GHB AND the 72 kit in the car? that way, depending on the event, I can choose. MORE OPTIONS THE BETTER.

I have several “preparedness kits/bags” in each of my vehicle.
    1) get-home-fast-bag

    2) extended larger get-home-not-so-fast bag

    3) combined medical/mechanical box. I combined both into a 30 mm ammo can. Hey, containers are priceless!

The following is an article I posted on my old blog, that has not been modified in over 3 years!

    GHB

I guess the survival knife isn’t exactly DISCRETE ;), BUT even on a light weight kit its worth it to me to have a pry bar, chopper, big piece of steel. This knife can be put on a

spear shaft for longer reach 🙂

I like the stainless steel water bottles because you can boil things in them for safe water. Just don’t over fill them if you are in danger of FREEZING, as they’ll split after awhile.

Baseball hat is important! I’d rather have a boonie hat, but that doesn’t fit into “I’m a normal dude, just trying to get home”

Left to Right: GHB, evac on foot kit/AKA 72 kit, OD shooting bag with all my stuff I like to take shooting…just in case.

    GHB CONTENTS:

    coke

Gatorade bottle FULL OF HONEY! (Someone suggested this, so I did it. PROS: lasts FOREVER, good source of energy, sugar…I guess you could attract some animals with it too 😉

zip ties (shelter, tack stuff on, secure “things”

    granular bars

    cliff bars

    LA Police nagene battle

    water bottle WITH filter inside

    2 stainless steel bottles

    paracord/550 cord

Medical kit with quickclot and “magic skin thats better than stitches, and super glue.

    compass

n95 mask – ash, dirty air, etc

wet wipes, more flex than TP and has other uses.

    2 cans of salmon

notebook to leave notes, log book, observations

    ear protection

Fire starting kit: water proof matches, normal matches, flint and vasoline cotton balls, candle, lighter (I’m Pretty sure I can start a fire with this stuff ;)…in ANY Condition. I’ve started fire with just flint and steel and DRY grass).

MONEY CLIP: credit card I don’t use, but has lots of balence :), money clip is ALSO a razor blade, $50 cash in small bills

    two small/cheap ponchos

garbage bags, shelter, carrying stuff, barriers, sleeping pad, man u name it garbage bags are AWESOME!

Gorilla dutch tape (awesome stuff! so much better than normal dutch tape.

    jerky

    Gatorade 2x

cap light (smaller than head lamp)

90 lums somewhat tactical flash light…batteries removed and lots of spare batteries in a ziplock bag.

multi tool – midsized, worth the weight if you ask me!

sausage that has a half life of 50 years (JK, expires in about 10 months from now)

    hand warmers

XD 9MM with 3 mags full, plus 50 round box of ammo. discrete fanny pack option or holster option.

hard candy (lasts a long long time)

two quality rain flys/poncho (military poncho and poncho liners are on my wishlist for my evac pack).

gloves – light enough I can still run my guns with.

EVAC BAG AKA Bug Out Bag (on foot)

So, I went to a DHS/FEMA presentation on a 8.0 earth quake in northern Utah.

It got me very serious about preparing to make it home from work in the event I can’t drive home, so here is a list of things you may consider putting in your car kit.

    • one grab and go pack. Mine is a non-tactical pack on purpose!
    •  My pack is large enough to put a underfolder (kel tec su 16c (2 mags, 200 rounds of ammo) in a tarp. Tarp can be used for just about anything (NONE BRIGHT COLORS!)
    • winter coat with hood – thick canvas outer shell
    • external survival knife – gerber LMF (outside the pack and reachable while wearing the pack). I can use it for defense, pressed into a hatchet if needed)
    • military winter sleeping bag
    • $60 worth of jerky, cliff bars, granola bars.
    • MREs, various canned goods (with easy open lids)
    • water filter, water purification tablets, 4 water bottles (1 stainless steal, 1 nalgene, several cheap water bottles)
    • fire log (small)
    • Nate’s awesome wood-gas stove and pot. http://www.woodcanstove.com/
    • multi-tool, various other tools
    • minor -first aid kit
    • 200 feet of paracord
    • $50 in cash…small bills.
    • hygiene kit
    • spork/eating utensils
    • 2 flash lights (1 is none, 2 is one)

    • I also have a very large toolbox with first aid stuff in there. I have two bags in there I plan to grab and go too.
      • One is a zip lock bag with various things(gloves, major-first aid items) and
      • a discrete fanny pack with a 9mm (this can be worn with the back pack, and be “handy” if needed to deploy 9mm (again 200 rounds). Everything looks discrete and “normal” (hey, this guy just keeps in 72 kit in his car…nothing tactical and nothing that says, hey this guy is a survivalist. Rather, this guy kept his 72 kit in his car, and now is trying to make it home with a couple of coworkers that live by him.

    • I also have another large toolbox, with various tools inside.
    • buddy bag – its got several ponchos, rope, climbing gear, various small items that’d be handy

    GRAB AND GO

    1) major medical kit

    2) discrete fanny pack with 9mm

    3) ham radio in emp proof bag (also inside an ammo can)

    NEED TO ADD:

    • energy drink (do NOT take on empty stomach), two bottles of coke
    • spare holster
    • smell proof gas bottle to help others with.
    • ear protection
    • binocs
    • mace
    • bug mask /bug spray
    • mole skin
    • maps of area and map out bike shops, ammo re-supply.

    • rubber gloves
    • zip ties/bailing wire
    • lighter
    • advill
    • sunscreen
    • wool socks

OD coat covering 72 hr kit. Notice black “buddy bag”, two tool boxes. one for medical and one for mechanical.

OD coat removed, fits NICE 🙂

acu camo jacket, used to cover me or pack or whatever.

    water bottle filter!

30,000 gallon water filter (black bag)

CAFFINE and 2 FULL water bottles

    200 feet of OD paracord

    SAS survival guide book

    gerber LMF and gerber multitool

first aid kit, 2 ponchos (notice LARGE green tarp.

shovel (anything can be a weapon)

    hygene kit

FOOD: a shload of granola bars, jerky, a shload of cliff bars

    Book Of Mormon (mini)

kel tec su16 with under folder and 2 mags (shload of 62 gr Green tip )

2 compasses, two flashlights. I bet I have no less than 5 flash lights in this one car.

military winter sleeping bag (its in the white garbage bag (somewhat water proof)

fire starting kit, including cotton balls with vasoline, massive matches (I ALWAYS have flint and steel with me…which loves to start cotton balls on fire).

    large black garbage bags

canned salmon (oh, its so good, you just pop it open and devour it!)

    TP and wet wipes

    duct tape

sierra cup with “hobo knife and spork

    various MREs

ham radio in ammo can, inside foam, inside EMP proof zip lock bag (car charger, freq list, AA battery pack in case lithium fails). 2 meter and 440, and every emergency freq known to man

notice “discrete” fanny pack with 4″ 9mm, 3 mags. Recall handguns are for unexpected events and rifles are for expected events. Ponder this for your travel home.

kel tec su 16c (takes standard ar15 mags, FOLDS, and is PISTON. weights about 4.7 lbs, costs about $400, so its not going to break the bank if it gets rusty.

NATES AWESOME WOOD-GAS stove!!! stove fits INSIDE pot! requires almost no wood to boil water (safe drinking, warm body, cook dehydrated foods)

I can reach my knife with the pack on, and draw it too. Putting it back in the sheath with the pack on is challenging and likely cut something I don’t want to cut 🙂

    Normal hat (non-boonie, none-military).

BOOTS! fresh socks!! (notice paracord for laces in the boots? I do this with ALL my boots, I could use that for rope in a pinch).

mechanical. Notice the wrench keeper, my mom made this for me when I was a teenager (so I could be like my dad (he has one just like it). I LOVE this wrench keeper!!!

quick ties are awesome for badguys, tac’n gear on etc. etc.  dutch tape, bailing wire and quick ties… GOOD STUFF. I helped a coworker get into his locked vehicle the other day with a hanger wire 🙂

tire repair kit (plugs) and fix-a-flat (awesome stuff), OIL! sockets, misc other tools.

You might want to check out this thread about making a bugout bike. I’ve been an avid cyclist for years and I think cycling will be the number one mode of transportation after an EMP hits. Bikes are much more efficient than even horses. Chromoly steel framed bikes are the best ( any 1980’s- early 90’s bike is probably steel). Aluminum framed bikes are lighter and OK to use too, but steel is stronger and can take abuse whereas aluminum fatigues over time and can fail unexpectedly, crack, etc. You might want to consider having a bike with racks so you can mount your 72 hr kit to the bike. If space is tight in your car trunk, there are folding bikes with smaller wheels that are much more compact that would work just as well as a regular bike ( although they look a little goofy). Also, i think your car evac-pak/ 72 hr kit should ideally be minimal because you just need enough supplies to get home as fast as possible. You dont want to be burdened down with unnecessary weight. Really you only need water, food, proper clothing, self protection arms, and a few other things incase you get delayed unexpectedly ( like the wood can stove, a good knife, etc). Just some ideas.

    WHAT NOT TO DO!

WTF! Where is The Freaking WATER! …genius!

This guy needs to focus on skills…NOT GEAR!

I think this genius owns a survival store where he peddles “survival junk” to greenhorn customers 😉

I like how all his gear is still brand new! NEVER USED.

those space blankets are about as useful as a piece of plastic. PLASTIC is BETTER…don’t depend on worthless space blanket.

  • Gun and Gear Painting workshop requirements

Also – with these projects – due to the flash time, folks may want to leave their projects hanging for a day or two and come back to pick up.
After tacky flash time is up, it’s no problem to transport – they can hang to cure at home.

You MUST signup for the workshop at (if you haven’t already signed up):

    https://libertyfoxdefense.com/workshops

Austin/West Desert Arms has the following colors, you can pay for what you use:
White, FDE, Desert Sand, OD Green, Sniper Gray, and Graphite Black.

    EQUIPMENT LIST

    PPE (Personal Protection Equipment)

    • Nitrile gloves (critical for degreasing process and for overall protection of hands)
    • Face mask (either n95 or paint respirator – cerakote is extremelycaustic.)
      • n95 for basic projects > Walmart masks
      • Better respirator for Cerakote and related projects.
      • This is the respirator I’d recommend. You can use it for all sorts of stuff later on.
      • Better Respirator
    • Clear eyeglasses (Under $2 at harbor freight)

Preparation: Degreasing, Surface Prep, Finishing (please do this BEFORE the workshop)

    • Acetone for regular degreasing.
    • Brake cleaner for heavier or rapid degreasing (It’s also veryquick drying and leaves a surface ready to take a paint coating)

    – I usually keep an eye out for sales of this at Autozone, Oriely’s, etc. Walmart may have good pricing per can as well. (Anything under $5/can should is reasonable)

    • Quality masking tape           (I recommend a quality mask tape (like frog tape or “edge seal” masking tape) many spray coatings are extremely thin when sprayed on and can easily creep under the edges of low quality masking tape. A quality painting tape can help prevent this from happening.)
    • Sand paper (optional depending on items to be painted)           I use automotive wet dry sandpaper, in grits of = 220, 320, 400
    • Can use 3M green Scotch Brite pads as well.
    • Steel wool (000…. This is used for burnishing the surface after painting Cerakote air-dry)

    Painting

    • Newspaper (good amount)
    • Cardboard (just old boxes are fine. These will be backdrops and guards for painting overspray.)
    • Wire hangers (we use these for hanging and spraying) (supplied by Thomas)
    • Plastic sheeting (if doing spraying. If hand painting – not needed) (supplied by Thomas)
    • Paint:

    High end options

    Effective budget options

    • Rustoleum Camouflage series

    Amazon Rustoleum Link

I’ve had great results with Rustoleum camo series.

You can pick up a matte clear to finish a top coat as well. (Walmart)

    • Krylon ultra flat camo series is also very good, but you’ll need to shop around.
    • Brownell’s Alumihyde II – this stuff is extremely resistant to most all chemicals and cleaners. For the price and with the right application technique, it’s hard to beat this great solution as no special equipment is needed – just instruction needed for tetechnique

    Aluma-hyde

    Nozzles

    – I recommend getting a pack of clean out nozzles, and a pack of replacement nozzles.

    – I use these for everything from Aluma-hyde to Rustoleum / Krylon projects.

    Paint Equip Supplies

    – Pipettes (if mixing colors)

    – Plastic trays for mixing & hand dip painting (something that won’t dissolve, no styrofoam cups or cheap plastic cups. Glass dishes from DI work well.)

    – Wood mixing sticks – popsicle sticks – or even Qtips.

    – Sponges for hand dip painting (This is what I use for custom ATACs-AU camouflage pattern – works awesome)

    Like This

    Or This

    – If going full DIY and you want to spray liquid style paint. I’ve had good results with these.

    Preval Spray Kits

    – Camo screening materials / stencils

Can do a youtube search for camo painting gear. Look for videos that use natural materials like branches, and other items like mesh laundry bags, etc.
