We have 5 kids and I try to make a great memories with each of my kids. When my oldest was 12, he & I made bowie knives together.

Now that my youngest is 12, we made a knife together.

These traditions are fun because each kid can earn a 22 rifle, a 9mm pistol and a ar15 freedom rifle. Helps them learn new skills, have a memory with their family and have a family heirloom to hand down for many generations.

Our build started with a knifekits.com knife kit. Cuz forging is pretty time consuming and both my sons already have experience forging blades.

This is the kit we bought.

I’m happy with the steel, but wish we’d gotten fancy pins and fancy scales.

PROTIPS:

  • put two scales together, then tape onto blade and use the blade hole to drill the two holes onto the scales at the SAME time.
  • Let your kid sand early on and keep an eye on them.
  • sand the part of the wood scales that are right next to the blade BEFORE gluing.
  • Let your kid learn, the main point is learning, not having the perfect knife.

protip, sand the tip that will be next to the blade, as once glued, you won’t be able to sand here. You can’t always sand with powertools, sometimes you got to sand by hand.
epoxy time! Tape up the entire blade so you don’t get epoxy on it!
in the rough, but coming along. Let the epoxy set for 24 hours or overnight!
at 80 grit, it comes off FAST!
clamped to work bench so we could use orbital sander
450 grit and then 600 grit for the last two hand sandings
final coat is wood “oil”
my knife I made with my older son 10 years ago…on the right.
