  • Why you should consider a 300 blackout for your ar15

This blog article is combined from several emails from Doc Gunn.

Thomas also agrees & loves the 300 blackout for the reasons listed here.

    1. 556 is only 55-67 grs, while a 300 blackout/blk is 110-220 +/- gr bullet
    2. you can use your standard ar15 mags for 300 blk
    3. same bolt, same mag-well, same everything other than you just simply add/swap for a 300 blk upper
    4. suppressed the 300 blk is a joy and almost no felt recoil. subsonic ammo suppressed, hopefully we never NEED anything like that, but it is fun at the range.
    5. MAKE SURE you NEVER put a 300 blk cartridge into your 556 upper. CLEARLY label every 300 blk magazine and NEVER put 556 ammo in those specially designated mags. I have camo dutch taped wrapped around my 300 blk mags and I have them labeled with a lable machine “300 blk”. I also label my 300 blk upper on both sides.
    6. Ballistically, the 300 blk has better ballistics & wind “bucking” ability than the 556/223.
    7. Thomas Recommends a “Freedom Rifle” for everyone in your family chambered in 556/223. After than, you should get at least 1 300 blk upper.

    SAFETY FIRST:

If you put a 30 cal bullet into a 556 chamber/barrel, it will explode damaging the gun & hurting the operator.

some will chamber, if fired will explode your gun/face.
some will chamber, if fired will explode your gun/face.

    http://blog.westernpowders.com/2015/12/a-dangerous-mismatch/
Doc Gunn Recommends designating “300 blk mags”. For example:

    http://www.brownells.com/magazines/rifle-magazines/magazines/ar-15-m16-30rd-223-5-56-l5-advanced-warfighter-magazines-prod44810.aspx

You will never have an issue so long as you never use 300 blk in your ar15 upper.

WHY you need a 300 blk

Nice thing about the 300 BLK is all you need is a dedicated upper, which can be had for around $300-350.  Should also have dedicated magazines that are visibly and physically distinguishable to prevent 300 into 5.56 chamber, which can result in a detonation, destroying the weapon and posing a serious danger to anyone near.

Ammo can be made from .223 cases and any .308 rifle bullet, including hardcast for low-velocity rounds.  Pistol powders are used as propellants.  300BLK reloading dies are cheap.  ($40.00)

As for ammo availability in a worst case scenario, put your 5.56 upper back onto the lower receiver.

Total cost of conversion is no more than another quality self-defense pistol.

As for a superior caliber, I still prefer the 6.8 SPC.  The bolt for the 6.8 is different than the 5.56 (although they both use the same bolt carrier.)  There are dedicated magazines for the 6.8.  I have not tried to load 6.8 ammo in a 5.56 magazine, but the 5.56 mags might work satisfactorily.

I have uppers in 300BLK, 6.8 SPC and 9x19mm.  (9mm needs a $180 magwell conversion block and colt-style 32 round metal 9mm mags from Brownells.)

I REALLY like the 9mm in an AR platform!  Great practice round for ARs, and safe to shoot steel.  (115 at 1400 fps vs 1160 from a 4″ barrel.)

I recommend a multi-caliber AR pistol lower, then adding a 9mm PISTOL upper from Rock River Arms.  SWeeeeT!  Also good to suppress a 147 9mm at no more than 1000 fps

Doc Gunn’s recommended 300 blk ammo:

    BEST:

My best personal handload for the 300 BLK is a Barnes 110 grain TTSX under 20.0 grains of H-110 (Rem 7.5 primers, cases trimmed to 1.368” and an oal of 2.245”) at a chronographed 2,324 fps and 1,312 ft-lbs energy at the muzzle (still has 2,046 fps and 1,023 ft-lbs at 100 yards.)  This was from a 10.5″ barrel. This load is still going 1,546 fps and has 583 ft-lbs energy at 300 yards.  It is an excellent accurate hunting round with both expansion and penetration.

    My Other 300 Handloads:
110 Hornady V-MAX should be similar to the 110 TTSX, but a with more fragile, fragmenting bullet that is less expensive to load in bulk.  It is an excellent self-defense load when penetration through barriers is not required.  It is available from several sources (including HSM) as a factory load at reasonable prices and is very accurate.
17.0 grains of VitaVuori N100 gives an estimated 2,200 fps using a 110 grain projectile.  (It is bulkier than H-110 and not as much will fit into the 300 BLK case.)

    Cheap Blasting, Fun, Courses:

150 gr Hormady BT-FMJ loaded to an oal of 2.122″ under 17.5 grains of H-4227.  Rem 7.5 primers.  (Not chronographed, but it is powerful and very accurate with no pressure signs.)

SUBSONIC Loads (from reliable Internet sources):
Accurate Powder Data: (We might want to decrease these loads slightly as the claimed velocity is around 1,050 fps. I’d try 10.6.)
220 grain Sierra HPBT MK at 2.089″ oal, maximum of 10.9 grains of Accurate-1680.
210 grain Sierra HPBT MKL at 2.170″ oal, maximum of 10.9 grains of Accurate-1680.
    Hodgdon Powder Data:

220 grain Sierra HPBT at 2.260″ oal (Probably cannot be loaded that long and still fit into mags?  I do not load longer than 2.245″.) 10.5 H-4227 or 9.9 grains of H-110 (or Winchester 296 which is the identical powder to H-110.)

Also an excellent link from Sierra bullets:
    https://sierrabullets.files.wordpress.com/2013/07/300-aac-blackout.pdf

This Sierra link mentions 2 excellent loads for the 300 BLK using a supersonic 125 grain bullet that will closely approximate 7.62x39mm ballistics with velocities of 2,200 fps compared to the 2,400 fps we expect from the Soviet load.  The hunting version uses their 125 grain SPT Pro Hunter, loaded to an oal of 2.000″, under 18.7 grains of H-4227 or 17.2 grains of Lil Gun.

Freedom Munition’s 147 grain FMJ 300 BLK is reasonably-priced loaded ammunition but is very inaccurate, grouping 4+ moa in my 300BLK which is capable of at least 1-2 moa with good ammunition.  Buy it only for cheap blasting ammunition or as an alternate source of 300 BLK cases.  https://www.freedommunitions.com/ammunition/rifle/300-aac-blackout.html

Here are the details for the Sun Oven Workshop cookout.

PLEASE register for workshop (In the comments, please list what you plan to cook).

WHAT: Come be mentored by a Sun Oven Guru.

    WHEN: August 27, noon-3pm, 2016

    WHERE:
Neighborhood Park at: 2301 Western Drive, Saratoga Springs, UT 84045
    https://www.google.com/maps/dir//40.3201276,-111.910001/@40.3201546,-111.9120509,17z/data=!3m1!4b1

WHY: Everyone likes to eat. Potluck if you want to. This can be recreation & preparation.

Sister Lisa Card Cox of Lehi will be the “Sun Master” for this event.

We attended her sun oven cooking class last week at the Barebones Campout at Tifie Ranch near Morgan, Utah, and she was exceptional and very informative.

If you have a sun oven, please bring it, and let us know what you are going to cook for lunch for all.      We would like you to consider cooking either an entire, a dessert, or a bread in your sun oven. If you don’t have a sun oven, please consider purchasing one. Just type in “sun oven” on Google, and you will see an article that describes the top 5 sun ovens for 2016.

In the event of a grid or power loss, using a sun oven will be effective any time the sun is shining, after you have used up your propane, charcoal, and/or local wood supply. You can also go to “youtube” and learn how to construct a very effective sun oven using heavy duty aluminum foil and a cardboard box.

We are inviting ALL interested persons, whether you have a sun oven or not. Please bring all older children who might want to learn about this cooking skill. As there will be some 20-25 sun ovens cooking hot foods, this might not be an appropriate environment for small children and pets.

    Be prepared to bring:

    • A sun oven (or just come to observe and learn)
    • A small, sturdy table, and perhaps an oil pan or cookie sheet or a small plywood sheet to protect the table from heat and food stains.
    • A meal of any entree, a bread, or a dessert to cook in your sun oven.
    • An appetite to sample all of the yummy food that we will all be cooking.

In the event of rain or a lack of sun, we will reschedule this event two weeks later so as to not interfere with the Labor Day holiday.

Please give this event wide dissemination to all local persons who might be interested.

  • What is wrong with Glock?

Glock perfection is so “perfect” it has had little to no “upgrades” in the past 15 years.

Glock perfection is so perfect, that the chamber in 40 SW doesn’t need to be supported…oh wait, they do blow up in your face.

Glock is like leupold, they have little reason to innovate.

IMO, Glock is old technology. Yeah Windows XP was awesome, but now we have Linux!

There is no perfect gun, if there was we’d all own ONE gun.

Here is my list of things Glock could improve.

    • Not every self-defense “class”, but MOST classes we have 1 or two Glock Frontsight’s come loose. So, we glue them and re-tighten them. How do we find out? The student goes from excellent groups, to poor groups. After inspection, the 3-4 threads that were holding the Glock Frontsight has come loose. HINT: Use a battle proven dove-tail slotted frontsight (like almost every other maker on Planet Earth).
    • Unique grip angle. So much muscle memory with an odd grip angle means all your other guns will “point differently”, so you are forced to stick with glocks for sub-compacts (AKA over priced…and late to the market single stack 9mm). Seems to me the odd grip angle is compensating for “isosceles shooters”; may they rot in hell!
    • Unique “dead trigger”. Meaning if you have a type3 malfunction, many schools say, “Glocks trip your trigger”. Before doing a type3 “symptom” drill. All other pistols, have a dead trigger for a type3 and you train to that symptom.  Dead trigger, look and move; FIX IT!
    • unsupported chamber for 40 S&W…google it!
    • Slow to market back straps that can be adjusted for different sized hands.
    • defective slide-release; Small & usually upgraded at additional cost.
    • out-dated mag release. Modern guns have an ambi-mag-release.
    • Plastic sights. Doing one handed malfunction drills will surely jack-up your plastic sights. Again, many upgrade at additional cost with after market sights.
    • Gen4 glocks have extremely aggressive stippling that will wear out your clothing!
    • If they were so perfect, why were they 10 years BEHIND a single-stack 9mm like the pf9 etc etc etc.
    • ugly duckling, the only gun more ugly is the “high point” and taurus POS.
    • NOT made in America.
    • issues shooting all-lead bullets in Glocks
    • Glocks were awesome 20 years ago!
    • Plastic guide rod.  Budget guns have plastic guide-rods.
    • Out dated “take down”,  doing both release impossible to use “slots” and then pressing the trigger to “field strip”?  If you don’t know how to come over the top with your primary hand, its near impossible to field strip a glock.
Take down an XDM is lock the slide back, rotate a large lever and pull the slide off…NO TRIGGER PRESS.
    • Find me a Glock owner that shoots as much as me…that has NOT put another $300 into upgrading their “perfection”.
    • Gen 1,2,3 had silly “Finger groves in the front of the glock stocks”, which adds to its ugliness.
    • Glock mags are sticky, sometimes when the mag is empty, you have to dig the mag out of the mag-well, instead of it just dropping out like nearly every pistol maker’s system.
    • Amazing “marketing”, “no, that is just marketing”.  Someday there MIGHT be a glock 2.0…we can hope, but until then, its 1.2 & 1.3 & 1.4 & 1.5. No significant improvement to be called a 2.0…yet.  gen2=1.2, gen3=1.3, gen4=1.4, gen5=1.5
    • Glock came out with a carbine, but will only sell to the gov. Which means they believe that only criminals should have guns. Very different from Sig, which every possible gun they make for the military, gets sold to Citizens too (except the full autos).

    Pros/CONs of XDs/XDMs

    DOWNSIDES to xd/xdm
    1. sights are a bitch to “adjust”, both because the slide is slimmed down & they are VERY tight…and have grooves.
    2. The grip safety should only be for firing the gun, not running the slide IMO.  I personally LOVE the grip safety. there are many times handling or reaching for a gun I can’t see(usually at night), and knowing I won’t accidentally bump the trigger is re-assuring.
    3. no 10mm option 🙁  (Springfield tell us in 2017 they will release an XDM in 10mm!)
    4. a BIT heavier than the glock, due to more steel & robust build.
My FIRST professional gun class was with a Glock.   It took some time to come around due to perception bias of the Glock “perfection” marketing.
I offloaded it and bought an xd 🙂  I still have not upgraded or changed anything to that XD; with over 15,000 rounds through it at training classes.
I’m a reluctant Glock 20 owner, solely because there is not another polymer gun I like in 10mm.
I make a lot of excellent holsters for Glocks. I have a red-gun for all the glocks to make holster molds out of….if that tells you anything about my opinion of Glocks.
    I’ve owned a glock 27, glock 23 & glock 19.  I currently own a Glock 20/10mm.
When asked my professional opinion. I say, its hard to go wrong buying a Glock, Xd/XDM or S&W M&P.
Glocks are ok, but why not buy an upgraded Glock? Like an XDm or M&P?

    Upgraded Glock aka XDm

XDm enhancements glock owners may enjoy.

    • The XDm has a match barrel & match trigger.
    • 9mm has 19+1 magazine capacity.
    • The XD family of barrels can shoot lead bullets.
    • No need to pull the trigger to field-strip and a very simple/robust lever instead of 2 hard to operate take-down pins like a Glock.
    • Note the robust default sights, especially the front sight has a dove-tail groove, ensure the front sight will stay put.
    • Lots of indicators right out the box. Hammer indicator, chamber indicator .
    • Note the robust slide and how the guide rod shroud is very beefy.
    • No plastic back plate nor “mud hole”, near the mag well.
    • Magazines go in & out easily…even w/o ammo. Better mag design IMO. How many empty glock mags have you had to dig out of the mag well?
    • xdm/xd family have a more 1911 similar grip-angle.
    • Mag release doesn’t require “giving up combat grip” for small handed shooters and doesn’t have sharp serrations that bother some shooters skin.
    • Consider the gun & gear. Two mag pouches, a cheap-ass-holster (but it DOES work) & THREE 19+1 magazines…in a very nice case.
    • Slickguns.com you can typically buy a 4.5” XDm for $500-525
    • I know you don’t shoot steel cased ammo, but the XD family will eat them w/o issue.  I’ve had several very hard extractions of steel cased ammo in my Glock 27…hammer & dowel routine 🙁    I think I’ve put about 10,000 rounds of steel cased ammo through my 5″ tactical XD without issue.
    • Consider your thoughts on the grip & stippling of the XDm. IMO the Glock gen 4 stippling is TOO aggressive and will chew up your clothing for conceal carry(as reported to me by several people).  The original XD had a few improvements over the glock, but if you consider all the things XDm added it is an amazing system for the cost/benefit.
    • My wife & daughters that are not as strong as some, can run the slide of a 4.5″ XDm, but can NOT run the slide of a Glock 17.
    • I own many XD/XDms and I have not upgraded anything on any of them, except tritium sights.
    • You’ll find they are a good value, very robust and good shooters. The 4.5” xdm 9mm is totally concealable IMO via one of my holsters IWB.  Given the narrower slide.  The g17 is nearly impossible to conceal inside the waist-band (IWB) IMO.

One argument is that you have a wider selection of sub-compacts with Glock, for example the glock 43 compared to xds 9.

    Please refer to this spreadsheet:

desc width over all length weight (empty) oz capacity overall height estimated knock down power cost
    Glock 42 0.94 5.94 13.76 6+1 4.13
    Glock 43 1.02 6.26 17.95 6+1 4.25 450
    xds 9 0.9 6.3 23 7+1 or 8+1 4.4 400
    pf9 0.88 5.85 12.7 7+1 4.3 400 300
    S&W shield 9mm 0.95 6.1 19 7+1 or 8+1 4.6 310

If operator is using the proper technique, they should never have issue with the grip safety. If they have issue, they are gripping it improperly.
Cost of magazines are favorable for the XDm ($27), same with accessories (pistolgear.com).

My PERSONAL preference is XDm 1st, M&P 2nd, glock 3rd.  If the M&P had a grip safety & ambi mag release, I might switch.  But then I’d have to fix all the triggers on the M&P.  I believe M&P 2.0 has “fixed” their trigger issues (at least the ones I’ve shot/handled).

The glocks are more work and most serious shooters upgrade the barrel, trigger & sights….costing at least $300 per system.

I would bet my life all 3 of these systems….and I OWN all of these systems.

  • Powering your home when the grid is down for less than $650

Recently, we did a “workshop” to watch this product demo’d at my friends house.

This is a new…but proven product that allows you to switch the electricity coming in from the GRID to a 2000,3000, 4000 or 9300 watt generator!

    Installing “homerun” on my home:

    More details:
    http://www.myinpower.com/

NOTE: The group buy is OVER, but we have a few extra units for sale. We got a group buy discount and their price is going up! so don’t wait too long!

Currently, you may buy an extra homerun for $650. May the price is going up to $700.

    [gform form=’https://docs.google.com/forms/d/1wJEJDOtSxLHsTbBG_AjFHFM3At-G24CEnJp0iN6_UuY/viewform?start=invite’ ]

Thomas takes NO PAYMENTS for this. I’m simply compiling a list of those interested in a “group buy/pre-order”.

Please watch some of the videos, so you understand how robust/simple this device is. Once installed, anyone can cut-over to the generator to run your home furnace “blower”. (without the blower, your furnace can’t move the warm air. A gas heater isn’t very effective w/o a blower.

Depending on how many watts your fridge/freezer draws, you can also run your freezer to prevent from spoiling hundreds of dollars of meat and other vital food items.

Old people may also require cooling as a life-safety issue.

Store rain for an automatic chicken watering system.

I installed my rain barrel onto the back deck for gravity advantages.  This aids in function stacking, for example I can daisy-chain several water barrels together if needed, water my garden, or in a pinch filter the water for drinking (more likely washing or cooking).

Radio Familiarization/How to operate your HAM Radio UV-5Ra

    April 2016 Handout

    Thomas

UPDATE: March 2020 – SIGN UP for free workshop at:
    https://libertyfoxdefense.com/workshops/

WARNING: FCC requires a HAM Radio license to transmit on HAM Frequencies. I hear the fine is pretty high! A license is NOT required to LISTEN ONLY.
Take time to review the law for yourself, YOU are responsible for your safety!

The UV-5RA covers TWO HAM bands, the 2 meter & 70 cm, and can listen to FM radio Frequencies.

https://hamstudy.org/ is the quickest & easiest way to study to pass your HAM Radio license test.

Your Radio has been pre-programmed for Emergency Radio Communication (ERC) frequencies in “memory channels” for the Saratoga Springs, UT area. We recommend you charge your battery at least every 3 months.

For more quick start tips, visit my blog at:

    https://libertyfoxdefense.com/?s=ham

How to operate your HAM Radio LAB/HANDS-ON

    1. What Frequencies do not require a license? FRS do NOT require a license. These are channels 21 through 34. GMRS technically requires a license, which is ch35-ch42.
    2. How to listen to “Emergency Radio Communications (ERC)” Frequencies in our area?  Ch. 8 is our most used ERC freq., followed by Ch 1.
    3. How to get to the “memory Channels”? If your LCD display does not have text, push the ORANGE V/M button.
    4. How to toggle between “Memory channels”? See your BLUE A/B button? That toggles between top/bottom Freq.
    5. How to listen to the FM Radio? Push the LEFT side ORANGE CALL button to get into FM mode, then enter the 107.500 or whatever or use the arrow keys.
    6. How to tune-into NOAA (National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration)?V/M mode, use arrow buttons to get to ch 0.
    7. The radio has the ability to monitor two channels simultaneously, channels A (upper display line) and B (lower display line). The A and B channels that are stored in memory are the same, but the A channels are listed by frequency and the B channels are listed by name.
    8. My radio has not been programmed for my local ERC frequencies, how do I get my radio programmed?
      1. google/download chirp
      2. Contact Thomas via email to get the data file (if you are outside Utah, you will need to find our local frequencies (google repeaters and find a ham geek near you).
      3. Follow this how-to document on importing and pushing the config to your radio.

    Search amazon for uv-5r accessories.

    Recommended Radio (uv5r):
    https://amzn.to/3aS2mdc

I use chirp to program memory channels (common frequencies used in the area, including city/church emergency radio communications (ERC).

Blogging about my American History Glory M1 Garand 30-06 legend!

    Guess what fedex delivered recently?

I ordered it a couple of months ago, CMP finally processed it!

Too bad we can’t get m14/m1a; there are 100,000s of those just rotting cuz of “politicians”.

Yep, a CMP m1 garand! Welcome to our family/home!

    http://thecmp.org/cmp_sales/rifle_sales/m1-garand/

    <paste>

It was the first standard-issue semi-automatic military rifle.[5] Called “the greatest battle implement ever devised” by General George S. Patton,[6] the Garand officially replaced the bolt-actionM1903 Springfield as the standard service rifle of the United States Armed Forces in 1936 and was subsequently replaced by the selective-fire M14, starting in 1957. During World War II, the M1 gave U.S. forces a distinct advantage in firefights against their Axis enemies, as their standard-issue rifles were more effective than the Axis’ slower-firing bolt-action rifles. The M1 continued to be used in large numbers until 1963 and to a lesser degree until 1976. Like its predecessor, the M1 originated from the Springfield Armory. Today, the M1 remains in use for drill purposes.

Man, this makes one proud to be an American! Excellent engineering! Rifleman demanding an awesome system.

Lots of pros, a few cons (tactical reloads…not so much).

Takes you back to a simpler, more moral time in our history. Back when we were not a war-party.

I wish our granddaddy’s were still around, we would refuse to be “governed, by the consent of the people” and get rid of all these weasels. No more consensual assault by weasels.

What is ironic is, to get a pea-shooter like an ar15, you have to go through an FFL, but one of THE most powerful rifles on the planet, can be shipped right to your house…no FFL.

Somehow that makes sense in the govt-mind.

My buddy BuggetNuster is in the video. He lives around the corner from me; he wears my holster I made him…almost everyday.

so, now we need a sling, some “professional training” on how to run an m1 garand…and some mileage.

My 17y son suggested we put it over the mantle/fireplace for a while; to welcome it into our family.  The Hawkins 1820 54 cal.  will have to go into the safe for a while.

He asked, how much more does this weight…over my ar15? I said, about twice as much 😉

Seems to be in good condition, but has some deep marks in the stock.

This is the next piece for my “Freedom Rifle” display.

I only need a couple more to complete my American Freedom Rifle collection (sorry, no m1 carbine or other silly systems). Only Rifleman rifles from each major era.

Next one will be from the first revolution; late 1700s RIFLE and or a 1903.

    can you tell I’m excited!

  • My Fav SHOTSHOW Vids

This was the first year I have NOT attended shotshow in 4 years! seeing these videos made-up for not attending…a little bit. A cost/benefit analysis led me to get onto a every-other-year shotshow schedule.
One could buy another toy/tool for the cost of ticket, travel…and unplanned “addiction purchases” 😉

    my fav shotshow 2016 vids:

TOPS knives made in Idaho. My tradition is to buy one every year at shotshow (SHOT) for 50% off (I missed that this year!)

Finally a video w/o the hype & someone that knows what they are talking about!

clearly these “professionals” don’t follow the “ALL guns are ALWAYS loaded!”, NEVER allow the muzzle to cover anything you are not willing to destroy!
