The new MCX spear 7.62×51 comes with a muzzle device that is “very difficult” to remove.
I called SIG and they confirmed it is a RH thread, so you loosen it to the left!
Sig offered that I could send it to them and they would remove the muzzle device.
I tried a propane torch and tried that several times, to the point of damaging the finish of the muzzle device, which I didn’t care about cuz I’m putting my QD on there instead.
I watched a video of a guy that put his entire rifle into a boiling water pot, including optic. Made me think twice about following his method, but sig confirmed that soaking in hot water is a good way to get it off.
I removed the barrel and soaked it in a pot of water that had boiled, but I did not boil it while the barrel was in there. I let it soak for about 15 minutes in HOT water.
Then I put the barrel in nylon jaws in my vice and tried going left with my tekton wrench. It damaged the wrench it was so tight. I gave it all I had and it would NOT come off! So I added a pipe cheater at about 3′ long and started rounding the bolt on the muzzle device. I re-attached some where else and with the cheater it came loose. I can loosen 125 lbs torqued lug nuts pretty easily.
I have no idea how tight this was, but likely over 200 lbs. I think it should be closer to 50 foot lbs torqued. The rockset should loosen up with the torch or hot water soak.
After I soaked it in water, I sprayed it heavily with wd40 (water displacement) and let it sit and then wiped it all off and did it a 2nd time.
The taper was NOT included with the rifle box like past mcx.
