I agree, it is ridiculous to have a bolt action with a 60 capacity magazine ;)…or any rifle for that matter. Make each shot count! 20-30 rd mags that you can do tactical reloads and carry easily makes more sense than a drum.

I bought the drum specifically because the gov doesn’t like drums. I didn’t know I needed it until the gov said I shouldn’t have them (The American way).

For me, I need a couple of justifications to justify another niche firearm.

  1. coyote hunting
  2. bolt action rifle class coming up in May from Marksmanship Matters
  3. small caliber for youth hunters.
  4. might end up in my motorhome safe

Pros of the Ruger American Rifle (RAR).

  1. light weight
  2. inexpensive (my scope & mount cost more).
  3. good trigger
  4. threaded muzzle for suppressed options
  5. takes ar15 mags
  6. sling ready
  7. if I damage this rifle, I won’t feel bad.

Cons of this system

  1. the stock doesn’t fit well with my scope, so I got a cheek riser for $30 ish
  2. No flush fitting magazine…yet.
  3. out of the box, the bolt is a bit “not smooth”.

Accessories

  1. AAC suppressor
  2. AAC muzzle device…for suppressor
  3. cheek riser
  4. sling

  7. NOT recommended, but if the gov says we shouldn’t have them, make sure you buy a bunch of them. https://www.brownells.com/magazines/rifle-magazines/magazines/ar-15-60rd-pmag-d-60-223-5-56-prod75048.aspx?avs|Manufacturer_1=MAGPUL
  8. 10 rd or 20 rd ar15 mags are plenty. It came with one poly 10 rd mag.

top is RAR in 5.56 Bottom is RAR in 6.5 creedmoor with the magpul hunterstock. 6.5 RAR was 22″ barrel, but I had it cut down and threaded to 18″, so I could hunt with my suppressor 🙂

My thoughts on the magpul hunter stock.

  1. worth the extra weight! not really a lot more weight
    1. get that perfect length of pull
    2. get that perfect cheek height!
    3. stiffer and more accurate with the aluminum pillars.
    4. great sling attachment options along with m-lok!
    5. Seems a bit pricy (mine was about $250), but really turns the RAR into a great system for hunting.
    6. I have not gotten around to trying the hunter stock on the 5.56 RAR.
